“Fatshimetrie: Egyptian Diplomacy at the BRICS Summit 2024”
During the recent BRICS summit, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates, Badr Abdelatty, spoke to clarify Egypt’s position towards the BRICS group. He stressed that Egypt considers BRICS as an economic bloc above all, counting on this alliance to give a voice to the South and developing countries.
In an interview with “Fatshimetrie” last Tuesday, the Minister of Foreign Affairs stressed that Egypt opposes the policy of political polarization, stressing that serious regional and international challenges require consensus among the major powers.
Egypt has actively participated in all BRICS meetings in Russia since its official accession to the group in January 2024. Abdelatty stressed that BRICS is the voice of the developing world to reorganize the map of the global financial network.
He also recalled that Egypt, as a founding member of the Non-Aligned Movement, does not seek to position itself in any international political polarization. BRICS is not a political bloc, but rather an economic bloc working to promote common economic interests.
Abdelatty stressed that a military solution will not resolve any conflict, and that anyone who thinks that security and stability can be achieved through force is mistaken. He stressed that security and stability can only be achieved by restoring the legitimate rights of everyone.
Furthermore, Abdelatty strongly condemned the failure of the international community to stop the aggressions and the killing of thousands of innocent civilians in the Gaza Strip, the West Bank and Lebanon. He stressed the need for the international community to take a clear position that respects the principles of international law and to apply a uniform standard to all conflicts.
President Abdel Fattah El Sisi will hold several bilateral meetings with world leaders to ensure a unified voice in favor of preventing the escalation of conflicts, in favor of a ceasefire and an end to aggression.
The Minister stressed Egypt’s commitment to protecting civilians and ending the ongoing violence in the Gaza Strip, the West Bank and Lebanon. He stressed that no military solution will resolve these crises, and that stability can only be achieved in the region with the establishment of a Palestinian state on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
In conclusion, Egypt’s membership in the BRICS group opens up multiple opportunities for economic and commercial cooperation for the country. Egypt’s participation in the 16th BRICS Summit, under the leadership of President Sisi, is a first since its accession in JanuaryIt is hoped that this BRICS summit will be a powerful voice for the South and developing countries to address global economic challenges and reform the international financial system.
