In the current era where corruption continues to plague many areas of society, it is imperative that the media play its role as a watchdog and a check on the pervasive scourge. Through in-depth investigations, hard-hitting reporting and transparent communication, journalists have the ability to shine a light on acts of corruption, raise public awareness and encourage accountability of institutions and individuals.
One of the recent breakthroughs in the fight against corruption is the Supreme Court’s decision granting financial autonomy to local governments. This decision opens up new avenues for collaboration between the Economic and Related Crimes Commission (ICPC) and the media to promote transparency and accountability at the local level.
At a workshop organized by the ICPC in partnership with the National Union of Journalists (NUJ) and the MacArthur Foundation, ICPC Chairman Dr. Musa Aliyu highlighted the importance of collaboration with the media in the fight against corruption. He highlighted initiatives such as the Local Government Integrity Initiative and advocated for literary activism as a means of inspiring behavioural change through literature, jingles and thematic videos.
Dr. Ike Neliaku’s speech at the workshop highlighted the multiple facets of corruption that plague the Nigerian society. He lamented the huge losses caused by corruption and stressed the urgency of combating this scourge that is taking a heavy toll on the country’s development.
The NUJ President, Mr. Christopher Isiguzo, highlighted the crucial role of journalists in exposing corruption and promoting transparency and accountability. He reiterated that the power of the pen is undeniable and can be a powerful tool to expose corruption, challenge abuses of power and mobilise citizens to demand accountability.
Ultimately, the fight against corruption requires close collaboration between the media, government institutions and civil society. Journalists have a responsibility to remain independent, objective and rigorous in their work, in order to contribute to a more just, transparent and ethical society. Through quality investigative journalism and a constant commitment to the truth, journalists can truly make a difference in the fight against corruption and promote positive change in society.
