Internal tensions threaten unity of Nigeria’s People’s Democratic Party

In the turbulent backrooms of Nigerian politics, a recent spat between two prominent figures in the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has shaken the foundations of the party. During a recent interview on Channels Television’s “Politics Today,” tensions flared between two former allies, George and Fayose. Their heated exchange highlighted the growing tensions and divisions within the PDP, pointing to an uncertain future for the party.

George expressed concern over Fayose’s actions, suggesting that they could warrant an investigation for anti-party activities. George’s criticism was sparked by Fayose’s public praise for Governor Oyebanji, even going so far as to suggest that the PDP would struggle to defeat the current governor in the 2026 elections.

“Governor Oyebanji has done an extraordinary job,” Fayose said, implying that the PDP would need a “miracle” to secure victory against him.

The interview highlighted underlying tensions within the party, with George suggesting that Fayose’s outspoken support for the APC governor removed any doubt about his intentions. He suggested that investigations could be launched at the local level by the PDP to determine whether there was a need to impose sanctions on Fayose.

George’s criticism also focused on the growing fragmentation and disunity within the PDP, urging members to prioritise party cohesion. He stressed the dangers of public disunity and encouraged warring factions to resolve their differences privately to avoid further weakening the party.

The episode laid bare the internal tensions and power struggles within the DPP, highlighting deep divisions that threaten to undermine the party’s stability as it approaches the next elections. As party members attempt to navigate this turbulent political climate, it has become clear that concerted efforts will be needed to restore unity and trust within the DPP.
