Resumption of classes after teachers’ strike: A step towards quality education in DR Congo

Fatshimetrie: Returning to school after the teachers’ strike in the DR Congo

Monday, October 21, was the first day back at school for some teachers and students in the Maniema province of the DR Congo. After more than a month of strike launched by the Union of Teachers of Congo (SYECO), some public school teachers timidly returned to school, responding to the call of SYECO/Maniema.

The provincial secretary of the union encouraged teachers to return to work in order to save the school year, while emphasizing that the struggle continues. This call follows the commitments made by the President of the National Assembly, Vital Kamerhe, to take into account teachers’ salary demands in the next state budget.

This gradual resumption of classes demonstrates the efforts made to reconcile teachers’ demands and the need to guarantee quality education for students. Indeed, the strike has impacted the course of the school year and it is crucial to find a balance to preserve the interest of students.

Teachers play an essential role in society, training young people and contributing to the future of the country. Their mobilization for better recognition of their work is legitimate, but it is also important to find sustainable solutions to ensure the continuity of classes and the smooth running of the school year.

The issue of teachers’ salaries is a major issue that deserves special attention from the authorities. Investing in education means investing in the future of the nation. It is therefore essential to find sustainable solutions to guarantee decent working conditions for teachers and ensure quality education for students.

In conclusion, the resumption of classes in Maniema marks an important step in resolving the conflict between teachers and the authorities. This situation underlines the importance of valuing the teaching profession and guaranteeing decent working conditions, to ensure quality education for Congolese youth.
