Getting readers interested in politics may seem like a daunting task, but recently, a political event has sparked a lot of interest within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). This decision directly impacts the composition of the party’s top leadership and its internal functioning. Indeed, the appointment of a new leader within the PDP has been announced, leaving the current interim chairman, Ambassador Iliya Damagum, on the sidelines while the party finds consensus on this crucial choice.
Potential candidates to assume this role include veteran political actors such as former Benue State Governor, Gabriel Suswam, and the Director General of the PDP Governors’ Forum, Dr. Emmanuel Agbo. These two personalities are considered as neutral options capable of uniting the different factions within the party.
The move comes just days before a crucial meeting of the PDP National Executive Committee (NEC) scheduled for October 24, 2024. The meeting is eagerly awaited to end the internal struggles that have created unrest within the party hierarchy.
The PDP governors seem particularly interested in appointing an impartial leader to foster unity within the party.
The NEC honorary members issued a statement stressing the urgency of holding the impending meeting.
“It is regrettable to note the alarming developments within our party. These conflicts threaten to undermine the very foundations of our political movement,” the statement said.
The NEC members also stressed the importance of respecting the provisions of the party constitution, which provides for quarterly meetings to resolve conflicts.
In a turbulent political context, the decision to appoint a new leader within the PDP is proving to be a major turning point for the party. It is now up to the senior leadership to exercise diligence and wisdom in choosing the person who will lead the party towards unity and cohesion.
