A new era of inclusive and participatory local governance in Uvira

Fatshimetrie, October 20, 2024 – A deeply significant initiative recently took place in Uvira, in the East of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Young people and women from the region were invited to participate in a conference-debate aimed at raising their awareness of the principles of local governance. The event, organized by the Diocesan Justice and Peace Commission (CDJP), was a crucial step in promoting civic engagement and active participation in the democratic life of the community.

Me Cédric Mangala, as project manager, stressed the importance of raising awareness among the population of the values ​​of local democratic governance. By specifically targeting young people and women, the objective was to remove the obstacles that prevent them from fully participating in public affairs, while strengthening their capacities to get involved in these essential areas.

The discussions that took place during this conference gave rise to concrete and relevant recommendations. Among these, the adoption of a mentality focused on peace, collaboration and citizen control of the management of public affairs was particularly highlighted. Participants committed to promoting living together and proactively contributing to the harmonious development of society.

This gathering made it possible to reaffirm the importance of involving young people and women in building inclusive and participatory local governance. These community members now have a key role to play in promoting peace and development at the local level.

Under the enlightened moderation of Martin Nyongolo Luwawa, Director General of the Higher Institute for Rural Development (ISDR-UVIRA), participants became aware of the social challenges they face. By proposing concrete solutions and criticizing behaviors that are detrimental to social cohesion, such as tribal hatred, alcohol abuse, hate messages on social networks and selfishness, the speakers demonstrated their determination to build a better future for their community.

This conference is part of the innovative project “Pamoja kwa Mabadiliko” (together for change), funded by the international NGO CAFOD and implemented by CDJP-Uvira. This bold initiative is part of a dynamic of social transformation and aims to strengthen active citizenship and democratic governance at the local level.
