Crafts and resilience: when Congolese art inspires peace and unity

Goma, October 17, 2024 (Fatshimetrie) – Art has always been a powerful means of expression, communication and reflection on our society and the world around us. In the Democratic Republic of Congo, a country marked by conflict and hardship, artists find in their work a way to convey messages of peace, hope and national cohesion.

In the province of North Kivu in particular, artists like Abeli Muisha have committed themselves through their works to bring a breath of tranquility in an often chaotic context. Using simple materials such as wood and wire, Muisha creates kitchen utensils and other valuable objects, not only to provide for her family, but also to soothe souls and spread messages of universal peace.

The diversity of artistic forms and themes addressed by these artisans testifies to the cultural richness and depth of aspirations of the Congolese population. Artistic works thus become vectors of awareness, transmission of values and reminder of the importance of unity and solidarity in the face of current challenges.

However, the work of these artists is not without difficulties. The unrest linked to conflict zones hinders the supply of raw materials and sometimes disrupts the daily lives of creators. The recent shipwreck on Lake Kivu, which affected many families, is a cruel reminder of the dangers and fragilities faced by the inhabitants of the region.

Despite these obstacles, Abeli Muisha and other artists continue their mission, aware of the positive impact that art can have on society. By training young talents, sharing their know-how and encouraging creativity, they work towards a better future, where harmony and mutual understanding will prevail over disagreements and tensions.

Ultimately, art is not limited to simple aesthetics or decoration, but reveals itself as a mirror of our aspirations, our fears, our hopes. Through the skillful and inspired hands of Congolese artists, the contours of a society in search of meaning, justice and peace are drawn. May these works continue to shine and inspire, in a sometimes tumultuous world, the light of humanity and fraternity.
