The problem of urban crime remains a major issue in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and more particularly in Kinshasa. This issue concerns President Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi, who during the eighteenth meeting of the Council of Ministers, reiterated the urgency of combating this scourge, by providing concrete solutions to ensure the security and well-being of citizens.
Faced with the resurgence of acts of violence perpetrated by the “Kuluna” and other criminal gangs, the President stressed the need to act quickly and effectively. He thus urged the government to strengthen the mechanisms for supervising unemployed youth, by setting up structures for apprenticeships and social reintegration. This approach, focused on prevention and addressing the social causes of delinquency, aims to offer young people prospects for the future and to distance them from the cycle of violence.
With this in mind, the government, under the supervision of the Prime Minister, has committed to organizing mobile court hearings to try criminals and to strengthening control of the circulation and possession of weapons by law enforcement. Regular monitoring of measures to prevent and combat urban crime will also be ensured, in order to assess the effectiveness of the actions undertaken and correct any shortcomings.
At the same time, President Tshisekedi stressed the importance of collaboration between the various ministries concerned, in particular the Ministry of the Interior, National Defense and Justice, for a multidimensional approach to urban security. This involves adopting a comprehensive and coordinated strategy to effectively combat crime and ensure the protection of citizens.
Ultimately, the fight against urban crime in the DRC requires collective and concerted action by all stakeholders involved, both at the government and civil society levels. It is crucial to implement appropriate prevention and repression policies, while addressing the root causes of delinquency. This ambitious and resolute approach will ensure the safety and tranquility of citizens, and sustainably reduce crime in the country’s cities.
