Cicero’s Indelible Legacy: Analysis of Speeches and Argumentation

Fatshimetrie, October 17, 2024 – An in-depth analysis of the speeches of the Roman writer Cicero, particularly his work “Pro Quinctio”, was recently studied in a doctoral thesis at the Université Pédagogique Nationale de Kinshasa, in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This study, led by Bissa Danigele Nzambo, head of research at the UPN, focused on a comparison of the argumentative and logical connectors present in Cicero’s works, with a particular focus on the speeches “Pro Milone” and “Pro Quinctio”.

Considered one of the greatest authors in the history of the Latin language, Cicero was able to establish himself in the literary landscape of his time thanks to his exceptional oratorical talent. His influence in the field of Roman eloquence is undeniable, and his speeches are still studied today as perfect examples of the Latin language of Antiquity.

Cicero’s texts, especially his judicial speeches, are recognized as masterpieces of rhetoric and argumentation. Whether in “Pro Milone” or “Pro Quinctio”, the persuasive force of his words is undeniable, and his meticulous choice of argumentative and logical connectors builds the very structure of his speeches.

This doctoral thesis underlines the importance of Cicero’s legacy as a renowned writer and orator. His mastery of the Latin language and his ability to convince his audience make him an essential figure in ancient literature.

As a lawyer, statesman, philosopher and writer, Cicero left an indelible mark on his era. His contribution to the Latin language and culture remains an inexhaustible source of inspiration for students and researchers around the world.

Thus, this thesis defended at the National Pedagogical University of Kinshasa highlights the importance of the study of Cicero’s speeches in understanding rhetoric and argumentation in ancient Rome. Bissa Danigele Nzambo’s contribution to this field of research earned him the title of Doctor of Latin Letters and Civilization, thus perpetuating Cicero’s legacy across generations.

Through this analysis of Cicero’s works, it is clear that his influence on rhetoric and argumentation transcends the boundaries of time, and his literary genius continues to inspire and teach today.
