Fatshimetrie, October 18, 2024 – A tragedy struck the busy streets of Lubumbashi, a city in Haut-Katanga in the Democratic Republic of Congo, as two iconic stores, Bon Berger and Liberty Ma Maison, fell prey to flames Thursday evening. The fire, caused by an electrical short circuit, engulfed these businesses located side by side in the prestigious Park Hotel building, leaving behind a spectacle of desolation.
Firefighters from the Chemaf mining company responded promptly, managing to control the fire that threatened to spread. Despite their rapid intervention, the material damage was considerable, with the goods of Bon Berger and Liberty Ma Maison reduced to ashes. Even the Park Hotel bar depot was not spared by the voracious flames.
David Bibu, coordinator of the fire department of the Lubumbashi town hall, mentioned the need for an in-depth assessment by Snel to determine the exact circumstances of this disaster. However, the impact on these iconic businesses is undeniable, leaving behind a void that the local community will long feel.
This tragedy, the third major fire in commercial establishments in Lubumbashi in a year, raises questions about the safety of electrical infrastructure in the region. Residents and local authorities are faced with a worrying reality, that of a constant risk hanging over places of life and commerce essential to urban life.
As the flames die down and the debris still smokes, the city of Lubumbashi finds itself rebuilding part of its economic and social fabric. Hope remains that such disasters can be avoided in the future, through reinforced prevention measures and increased vigilance regarding the safety of electrical installations.
