Fatshimetrie recently published a news story that shook Cameroon: the arrest of suspected separatists in Calabar. This arrest was confirmed by the spokesperson of the city’s police, DSP Ewa Igri. The individuals in question are linked to the political entity proclaimed by the Anglophone separatists, known as Ambazonia.
Since 2017, the Anglophone conflict in Cameroon, pitting Ambazonian rebels against the Cameroonian army, has escalated. The separatists are demanding independence for the North-West and South-West regions of Cameroon, thus forming Ambazonia.
The security forces managed to get their hands on these individuals thanks to intelligence information. Among the items seized during the arrest were firearms, improvised explosive devices, boots, amulets and flags. The police spokesperson described the raid as a major breakthrough.
The suspects ranged in age from 18 to 36, and were confirmed to be involved in separatist activities. Their arrests led to the seizure of a range of weapons, including a GPMG submachine gun, an AK-47 assault rifle, empty magazines, bulletproof vests, and even an Ambazonia army stamp.
This news raises questions about security in the region and highlights the ongoing Anglophone conflict in Cameroon. The authorities must remain vigilant against the activity of separatist groups and ensure that no escalation of violence occurs. The situation remains tense and requires a balanced approach to resolve differences and bring peace to the region.
