Fatshimetrie, October 2024. The recognition and valorization of talents to promote positive masculinity are the subject of exciting discussions in Kinshasa. Indeed, during the recent “Thursday in Black” campaign, the importance of recognizing and celebrating the abilities of individuals was highlighted in order to foster an environment conducive to personal development and the construction of a more inclusive society.
Carlin Vese Pinzi, an expert in gender, positive masculinity and femininity, highlighted the humility necessary to recognize the talents of our loved ones, whether they are friends, neighbors, colleagues or members of our family. This approach, according to him, contributes to promoting a vision of masculinity based on positive and respectful values.
Each individual has unique qualities that deserve to be highlighted. Learning to accept oneself and appreciate the differences of others is a true sign of maturity and tolerance. By valuing each person’s talents, we encourage a culture of self-esteem and help build healthy and egalitarian relationships, free of discrimination and prejudice.
According to Mr. Vese, it is essential to instill this notion of self-esteem from a young age, both in adolescents and in people suffering from trauma or gender-based violence. Recognizing and highlighting the qualities of one’s spouse, children and anyone in a fragile situation is an act of generosity and compassion that contributes to building a more just and caring society.
Furthermore, men are invited to adopt a “positive masculinity” approach in order to combat the toxic and aggressive behaviors too often associated with virility. By saying “yes” to a masculinity based on respect, empathy and non-violence, men contribute to the advent of a more harmonious and egalitarian society for all.
The “Thursdays in Black” campaign is inspired by international protest movements against violence and injustice. In the DR Congo, it is taking place in several cities, aiming to raise awareness and mobilize civil society against gender-based violence, sexual abuse and harassment. It is by uniting our voices and actions that we can truly transform mentalities and build a world where everyone finds their place, respected and valued for their talents and uniqueness.
