Two homeless individuals have appeared in court to answer to the charge of theft. The prosecutor, Inspector Sodiq Adeniyi, informed the court that the two brothers committed the offence on October 17 at about 06:00 hours in Ado-Ekiti.
According to Adeniyi, the two brothers stole two chickens worth ₦30,000 belonging to Uche Elizabeth. The offence was allegedly committed contrary to Section 302(1)(a) of the Ekiti State Penal Code, enacted in 2021.
He asked the court to adjourn the case so that it can study the case file and assemble its witnesses.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), during questioning before the court, the second brother stated that he did not accompany his elder brother when the chickens were stolen. He added that Ekene had simply called him to come and get a chicken, as they did not live together.
The two accused, however, pleaded not guilty. Their lawyer, Oluwafemi Alabi, argued for their release on bail, promising that they would not default.
This case illustrates the need for fair and impartial justice for all citizens, regardless of their background or social status. It also highlights the importance of respecting private property and the belongings of others. As members of a civilized society, it is our duty to condemn and deter such criminal acts, while respecting the fundamental rights of all individuals.
In conclusion, justice should take its course, providing fairness to both victims and accused, thereby fostering a climate of trust and mutual respect within the society.
