Fatshimetrie, October 17, 2024 – The “One Health” scientific days are currently taking place in Bukavu, South Kivu, in the East of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Experts in the field of human, animal and environmental health have come together to discuss the crucial role of the “one health” approach in preventing and responding to epidemics that threaten our world.
Dr. Steeve Auta, renowned Virologist and Head of the Virology Department at the National Institute of Biological Research INRB/Kinshasa, emphasizes the importance of working in a concerted and interdisciplinary manner to face current and future health challenges. He recalls past epidemics such as avian flu, Ebola, Covid-19 and the current Mpox crisis, highlighting the need to collaborate with different health sectors for an effective response.
Professor Balthazar Ayagirwe Basengere, Academic Secretary General of UEA, draws attention to the multiple epidemics that the country has had to face, such as the Ebola virus and the growing emergence of Mpox. He emphasizes that South Kivu is particularly affected by these scourges, also including epidemics of Yellow Fever, Chikungunya, Dengue and Rift Valley fever.
These scientific days aim to raise awareness among a wide audience, including professors, researchers, students and experts from various fields of health. Organized by the INRB, the IRD and their local partners, including the Panzi General Reference Hospital, the Evangelical University in Africa (UEA) and the Bukavu Provincial General Reference Hospital, these meetings offer a platform for exchange and collaboration that is essential to strengthen public health.
In these times of numerous and complex health challenges, it is crucial to promote an integrated and comprehensive approach to health, which encompasses humans, animals and the environment. Lessons learned from past epidemics remind us of the imperative to work together to address emerging threats and protect the health of all. The “One Health” scientific days offer a unique opportunity to reflect collectively on these crucial issues and to outline avenues of action for a more resilient and sustainable future.
