Nutrition at the Heart of the Debate: The Call for a Healthy and Balanced Diet

Fatshimetrie, 17 October 2024 (ACP). – The issue of nutrition and adequate food was at the heart of the discussions during a meeting with a prominent nutritionist in Fatshimetrie, Democratic Republic of Congo. On the sidelines of World Food Day celebrated on 16 October, Ms. Emeyane Nuyri, President of the E-quilibre Foundation, stressed the crucial importance of a balanced diet for the health of all.

The objective of this day is to raise awareness of the importance of adequate and nutritious food, promote food security, and mobilize efforts to combat malnutrition and hunger that persist in many parts of the world. Ms. Nuyri stressed that millions of people suffer from malnutrition and food insecurity each year, highlighting the essential role that each individual can play by supporting local initiatives, reducing food waste and encouraging sustainable practices.

In the Democratic Republic of Congo, the situation of malnourished children is particularly worrying, with high rates of acute and chronic malnutrition. Many young people suffer from stunting and other health problems related to insufficient nutrition. To ensure a healthy diet, it is recommended to prioritize dietary diversity, consume fruits and vegetables, opt for whole grains, limit added sugars and saturated fats, and maintain adequate hydration.

Ms. Nuyri stressed the need to strengthen nutrition programs, improve access to nutritious foods, raise awareness among communities about the importance of nutrition, and support local agricultural initiatives to increase food production. World Food Day, celebrated every year on October 16, has the theme in 2024 “The right to food for a better life and future”.

In conclusion, it is imperative that everyone becomes aware of the impact of their food choices on their health and on the environment. By committing to a healthy and balanced diet, everyone can contribute to building a healthier and more sustainable future for all. ACP/C.L.
