Extension of age limit for university admission: A step forward for education in Nigeria

The recent announcement of the extension of the age limit for university admission by JAMB to 2025 has elicited positive reactions from the National Association of Parent-Teachers of Nigeria (NAPTAN). The move by JAMB to allow tertiary institutions to admit students who will be 16 years old by August 31, 2025 has been applauded by many.

Deputy National Chairman of NAPTAN, Mr. Adeolu Ogunbanjo, hailed the move as welcome. According to him, it gives hope to secondary school graduates who aspire to move to the next level of their educational journey. Furthermore, he stressed the importance of adapting to the current situations in education in Nigeria, stressing that the country should continue to evolve to meet the changing needs of the society.

Mr. Ogunbanjo also recommended that JAMB and education policy makers maintain the minimum age for university admission at 16 years to avoid unnecessary disruption. He encouraged students to prove their worth to gain university admission at the age of 16 by distinguishing themselves academically, morally and in other relevant areas.

This decision by JAMB illustrates a pragmatic adjustment from the previous policy which had set the minimum age of admission at 18 years. By allowing institutions to admit younger students, JAMB is opening up new avenues for young graduates and providing them with an opportunity to access higher education earlier.

In conclusion, this development in university admission policy is a positive development that deserves to be commended. It reflects the willingness to adapt to the needs of students and higher education institutions, while encouraging academic excellence and personal development of the youth.
