The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) recently took a critical step in its quest for transparency and integrity by inaugurating its new Anti-Corruption and Transparency Unit (ACTU), at a ceremony in Abuja. The event, presided over by TCN’s Managing Director, Engineer Sule Abdulaziz, highlighted the company’s commitment to efficiency and ethics in the delivery of electricity to Nigerians.

In his speech, Engineer Abdulaziz, represented by the Executive Director, Human Resources and Corporate Services, Mrs. Abiodun Afolabi, emphasized the importance of integrity in TCN’s role in bridging the gap between generation plants and distribution companies in Nigeria’s electricity supply chain. He said the new unit would serve to identify and mitigate potential risks related to corruption.

Engineer Abdulaziz said: “Some may wonder what contribution this unit will make to TCN and how it will affect our operations. The ACTU’s core objectives lie in improving the transparency of our processes by identifying potential risks and inefficiencies that could hamper our ability to meet the growing demand of the energy sector.”

He added: “The ACTU will also serve as a point of reference for ethics and compliance, ensuring that decision-making processes are in line with TCN’s vision of accountability and integrity. This will enhance public confidence in our ability to deliver our mission ethically and effectively.”

Speaking at the ceremony, the Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Dr. Musa Aliyu, represented by Olusegun Adigun, Director, Department of Studies and System Review, reiterated the commission’s commitment to promoting transparency and accountability in the public service.

Aliyu explained that the ACTU, an initiative of the ICPC, is an internal mechanism for preventing corruption that is in line with global best practices. He noted that the unit complements the ICPC’s efforts to strengthen institutions and promote accountability within government ministries, departments and agencies.

“The Transmission Company of Nigeria must not only perform its role responsibly, but also ensure that its members are diligent, responsive and dedicated to their duties,” Aliyu added.

In her address, TCN ACTU President Bembo Erakevwe pledged the unit’s commitment to upholding the Code of Ethics and working towards a more transparent and accountable TCN. This initiative is a crucial step in strengthening governance and accountability within the TCN, and marks an important step towards building a more just and ethical society for all Nigerians.
