Fatshimetrie, October 15, 2024 – The launch of the Rural Women’s Fortnight in Bukanga-Lonzo, Kwango province in the Democratic Republic of Congo, marked a milestone day to celebrate the importance and essential role of rural women in society.
Under the international theme “rural women produce good food for all”, the National Minister of Gender, Family and Children, Léonie Kandolo, stressed the crucial importance of supporting and valuing the work of rural women. Indeed, these women are the pillars of agriculture and livestock, ensuring 60 to 80% of food production in the region.
The Governor of Kwango Province, Willy Bitwisila Lusundji, also highlighted the essential role of rural women in the economic development of the region. He stressed that without their contribution, the local and national economy would be greatly impacted. He called for continued solidarity and support for these women who work tirelessly to provide for their families and the nation as a whole.
The provincial Minister of Gender, Marie-Josée Lulengwa, for her part, stressed the importance of this day to draw attention to the living conditions of rural women and young girls. She advocated for increased support in terms of assistance in agricultural inputs and others to enable rural women to develop their activities and improve their living conditions.
During this ceremony, exhibitions of agricultural products and sketches by women from Kwango and Kongo Central were presented, highlighting the talent and know-how of rural women in the field of agriculture and livestock breeding.
By handing over farming equipment to rural women in Kwango, the national Minister of Gender, Family and Children stressed the importance of supporting these women who play a key role in food production and economic development in the region.
In conclusion, the rural women’s fortnight in Bukanga-Lonzo was an opportunity to highlight the remarkable work of rural women and to advocate for increased support for these essential actors in the development of the nation.
