The rise in the price of papain: an economic issue and a health benefit

Kinshasa, October 15, 2024 – Papain, this beneficial enzyme extracted from papaya, is currently in the news for its price increase on international markets. This protease, known for its ability to break down proteins, is seeing its price increase significantly. Indeed, according to the latest data from the National Commission of Mercuriales of the Ministry of Foreign Trade, the price of a kilogram of papain reached 21.96 US dollars, an increase of 1.10% compared to previous weeks.

This increase is part of a context where several other agricultural and forestry products are also seeing their prices fluctuate on international markets. Among them, we find cinchona bark, totaquina powder, quinine salt and Rauwolfia which are seeing an increase, while robusta and arabica coffees as well as cocoa are seeing a drop in their prices.

Beyond economic considerations, it is important to highlight the many health benefits of papain. Indeed, this enzyme present in raw papaya has anti-inflammatory, anti-infectious and healing properties. It is particularly recognized for its digestive virtues, helping to relieve stomach aches and regulate intestinal transit.

Papain is therefore much more than a simple commercial agricultural product; it is a valuable ally for health and well-being. Its growing popularity on international markets reflects the recognition of its multiple benefits and its importance in the food and pharmaceutical industries.

In conclusion, papain embodies both an economic issue and a health asset, thus highlighting the importance of valuing and preserving natural resources such as papaya and its precious enzymes.
