Unexpected decision by the Minister of Hydrocarbons in the DRC: Behind the scenes of a sudden shutdown and future prospects

In the tumult of economic news in the Democratic Republic of Congo, an unexpected decision by the Minister of Hydrocarbons took the discussions by storm this Friday, October 11. Through an official statement, Minister Molendo Sakombi explained the reasons that led to the abrupt halt of the process of awarding hydrocarbon rights in the country.

Among the justifications put forward, we find non-existent applications, non-compliant offers, late submissions, inappropriate or irregular submissions, as well as a flagrant lack of competition on the market. These compromising elements were highlighted thanks to the report issued by the ad hoc commission responsible for supervising calls for tenders for the award of hydrocarbon rights in the DRC.

To remedy this situation and effectively relaunch the process, Minister Molendo Sakombi announced the establishment of an appropriate mechanism. Candidates who participated in the call for tenders are urged to contact the ad hoc committee to find out the practical arrangements for this new phase.

On a different note, the program “Echos d’économie” on Monday, October 14, 2024 addressed various current topics across the country. In Kindu, the conference on mines, energy and infrastructure opened its doors, offering a privileged space for exchanges and reflection on these crucial themes for development. In Mbuji-Mayi, an increase in the price of fuel in Mwene-Ditu, located in the province of Lomami, sparked mixed reactions among the population.

In Matadi, a strike by customs declarants disrupted port activities, highlighting the challenges related to the fluidity of trade in this region. In Goma, the World Bank Director of Operations visited the country to assess the specific needs of the East of the country, highlighting the challenges and prospects of this strategic area.

Finally, as guest of honor, the elected national deputy of Punia, Georges Bokundo, shared his in-depth expertise in the mining and hydrocarbons sectors, providing valuable insight into the potential of the Maniema province. A program rich in strategic information and relevant analyses that strengthen the understanding of the major economic issues currently at stake in the DRC.

Through these different themes and subjects, the program “Echos d’économie” aims to fuel reflection, spark debate and enlighten the public on the economic and societal dynamics that shape the future of the country. An unmissable event for anyone wishing to be informed and involved in the crucial issues of the Congolese economy.
