Family tragedy highlights urgency of mental health awareness

In a tragic and shocking act, a 26-year-old man named Nura Mas’ud did the unthinkable by setting his grandmother, Zuwaira Muhammad, on fire in Mu’azu village, Dan Gwanki area, Sule Tankarkar district, Jigawa State. The circumstances of this shocking event leave one speechless, revealing the cruelty and tragedy that befell this family.

The incident, reported on 8 October 2024, shook the local community and highlighted the senseless violence that can sometimes erupt within homes. Mas’ud confessed to intentionally setting his grandmother on fire, claiming that she had upset him by expressing concerns about his physical appearance and health. Despite his repeated warnings, his grandmother continued to harass him, which led him to commit the irreparable act. He bought fuel, which he poured on her before setting her ablaze, leading to her tragic death.

Local authorities, appalled by this unthinkable act, quickly responded and arrested Mas’ud, remanding him in custody to answer for his actions. Preliminary findings revealed that the suspect suffers from mental health issues and was being treated at Kazaure Psychiatric Hospital. This revelation underscores the importance of sensitizing and supporting people with mental health issues to avoid such tragedies in the future.

Jigawa State Commissioner of Police, A. Abdullahi, has called for the case to be handled with utmost rigor and the culprit to be prosecuted in accordance with the law to deter any recurrence of domestic violence. This harrowing case highlights the need to sensitize the population on mental health issues and promote preventive measures to avoid such tragic acts.
