Egypt at the forefront of migration governance: an example of exemplary international cooperation

Fatshimetrie recently highlighted a striking reality: Egypt currently hosts more than 10 million migrants, refugees and asylum seekers. This colossal figure raises major challenges in terms of reception and support for the populations concerned. Indeed, Wael Badawi, Deputy Foreign Minister in charge of Migration, Refugees and the Fight against Human Trafficking, stressed the importance of guaranteeing basic services to these individuals, considering them as full-fledged guests.

During a regional meeting on the implementation of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM) in Addis Ababa, Egypt confirmed its commitment to assuming its responsibility towards this migrant population. Badawi stressed the need for international cooperation, in particular to share the burden and ensure the sustainability of services offered to refugees and migrants, while fully integrating the host community into this dynamic.

Egypt is thus positioning itself as a pioneering country in the implementation of the GCM, emphasizing the essential nature of regular and orderly migration to promote development efforts and the implementation of sustainable strategies in countries of origin, transit and destination.

In this regard, Egypt is adopting a comprehensive approach to migration governance, emphasizing the need to address the root causes of migration, while raising awareness of the dangers of illegal immigration. The Deputy Minister also stressed the importance of strengthening legal immigration channels, through multilateral programs or bilateral agreements, while removing practical obstacles to their implementation.

Finally, Badawi highlighted the importance of the successful integration of migrants in the host country, thus promoting social cohesion between migrants, refugees and the local population. This inclusive and supportive approach is essential to create an environment conducive to the development of all.

In conclusion, Egypt positions itself as a key player in migration governance, favoring a humane, sustainable and supportive approach to meet the challenges posed by migratory movements. A vision of the future that advocates reception and integration, at the heart of contemporary international issues.
