Fatshimetrie, October 14, 2024 – The recognition and promotion of the rights of people living with disabilities remain major issues in Congolese society. It is with this in mind that a training workshop was organized by the Provincial Network of People Living with Disabilities for Development (REPROPHAD) in Kananga, capital of Kasai Central.
During this event, the provincial coordinator of REPROPHAD, David Lumbala, stressed the importance of equipping members of civil society working to defend the rights of people with disabilities. He highlighted the shortcomings observed among certain actors, preventing them from fully accomplishing their mission.
The workshop aimed to familiarize participants with the role of civil society and provide them with the necessary foundations to act as committed actors. Thanks to an interactive and participatory approach, REPROPHAD members were able to acquire the essential knowledge to effectively manage their structures and work in accordance with democratic and civic values.
David Lumbala stressed the importance of awareness-raising and civic engagement to strengthen the participation of people with disabilities in social and political life. He recalled the difficulties faced by these individuals in the province of Kasaï Central, thus justifying the creation of REPROPHAD and its awareness-raising actions.
The involvement of delegates from the province of Lomami demonstrates the desire to support and accompany initiatives in favor of people living with disabilities. By increasing awareness-raising sessions and strengthening the presence of people with disabilities in civil society, REPROPHAD contributes to greater inclusiveness and better representation of this vulnerable population.
In conclusion, this training workshop highlighted the challenges and important issues related to the promotion of the rights of people with disabilities in the Democratic Republic of Congo. It demonstrates the desire for action and commitment of civil society actors to build a more just and united society, where everyone, regardless of their abilities, can fully participate and flourish.
