In the field of university education, excellence and constant updating of skills are essential elements in ensuring the quality of education provided to students. Recently, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Christian Anieke, has taken significant steps to ensure that all actors in the academic world adhere to high standards of qualification and commitment.
During a “Spiritual Retreat” organised for university staff, Professor Anieke emphasised the importance of continuing education by requiring faculty members with lower degrees to update their qualifications or risk being dismissed from their positions. This directive, in line with the guidelines of the National Universities Commission, is aimed at ensuring quality education and ensuring that only qualified teachers occupy the classrooms.
Furthermore, Professor Anieke warned against potential abuses of the mentoring programme within the university. He also specified that graduate assistants would not be allowed to teach alone in class unless qualified lecturers were present. He also announced zero tolerance for lecturer absenteeism and stressed the importance of strictly following university management guidelines.
Reacting to the new direction, Professor MarySylvia Nwachukwu, Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, expressed concern over the low attendance rate of lecturers in the first week of resumption of academic activities. She said the Academic Supervisory Committee would intensify its supervision of classes to ensure that all lecturers fully discharge their responsibilities.
During the retreat, Rev. Father Liberatus Isife, a guest speaker and member of the Department of Philosophy and Religion, stressed the importance of the impact of knowledge imparted to students in ensuring the success of an educational institution. He highlighted the need for everyone to improve themselves and keep themselves constantly up to date, emphasizing that only a strong commitment and regular questioning can overcome obstacles to productivity and excellence.
In summary, commitment to continuous improvement, quality academic training and rigor in fulfilling responsibilities are essential principles for maintaining a stimulating learning environment conducive to the development of students and the entire university community.
