Maximizing the influence of the Democratic Republic of Congo within the Francophonie: An opportunity to seize

Kinshasa, October 11, 2024. The Democratic Republic of Congo, a French-speaking country par excellence, has immense potential within the Francophonie, an opportunity that is too often underexploited. This is rightly highlighted by Mabiala Ma-Umba, former director of education at the International Organization of La Francophonie (OIF), in his call for strategic use of this French-speaking influence by the DRC.

In the aftermath of the Paris Summit, some voices were raised to advocate the withdrawal of the DRC from the OIF, in reaction to diplomatic disagreements. However, as Mabiala Ma-Umba points out, such a decision would be a strategic error. It is time for the DRC to wake up and take advantage of its membership in the Francophonie in the diplomatic, cultural, tourist, economic and commercial fields.

The recent resolution adopted at the Paris Summit, condemning any unauthorized foreign military intervention in the DRC, demonstrates the unwavering support of the Francophonie for the territorial integrity of the country. This support must be capitalized on by the DRC to strengthen its position on the international scene, particularly in the face of actors such as Rwanda whose intentions remain suspect.

As the largest French-speaking country after France, the DRC has a key role to play within the OIF. However, to increase its influence, it must act proactively and engagedly within the organization. This requires concrete actions, relevant positions, and active participation in the various bodies of the Francophonie.

In recent years, the DRC has not fully exploited its potential within the Francophonie. Despite significant events such as the organization of the Francophone Games, the country has not been able to capitalize on these successes to strengthen its influence within the organization. It is therefore time for the DRC to redouble its efforts and get involved proactively to make its voice heard within the Francophonie.

In conclusion, the DRC has a major role to play within the Francophonie, and it is crucial that it seizes this opportunity to promote its strategic interests. By fully engaging within the OIF, asserting its skills and defending its positions with conviction, the DRC will be able to take full advantage of its status as a French-speaking country and strengthen its influence on the international scene.
