Fatshimetrie, October 12, 2024 – Last Saturday, committed members of the U-Report association in Kindu, Maniema province, Democratic Republic of Congo, gathered for a crucial awareness conference on the fight against Mpox. The event was an opportunity for these young participants to understand the importance and challenges of fighting this disease in their community.
Dr. Bertin Isaga, one of the keynote speakers, stressed the importance of sharing knowledge and effective strategies to raise awareness among local youth. He explained in particular the origin of Mpox, a zoonosis of which monkeys and other rodents are the main reservoirs of the virus. Participants were informed about essential prevention methods to avoid contamination, such as frequent hand washing, wearing protective masks, correct use of condoms and safe handling of wild animals.
Mathilde Kandolo Irène, representing the youth of U-Report, was pleased to have acquired a better understanding of the origin of Mpox and the control measures to be put in place. This educational initiative brought together participants from different communities in Kindu, demonstrating a collective mobilization and awareness of this public health issue.
This awareness-raising event helped to strengthen the knowledge and skills of young people in the fight against Mpox, highlighting the importance of education and prevention to effectively counter the spread of this viral disease. By working together and adopting responsible behaviors, the Kindu community can help protect the health and well-being of its members, while promoting a culture of solidarity and prevention in the face of public health challenges.
