The power of mutual aid and peace: 90 years of the Salvation Army in the Democratic Republic of Congo

Fatshimetrie, October 9, 2024 – Yesterday, the Salvation Army community fervently celebrated its 90th anniversary in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The event was marked by prayers for the return of peace in the eastern part of the country, a region ravaged by conflict. Colonel Gracia Matondo, an emblematic figure of this community, invited the faithful to join in this collective prayer for the establishment of peace, the cornerstone of any prosperous society.

In his remarkable statements, Colonel Matondo highlighted the values of mutual aid and solidarity that drive the Salvation Army. Far from materialistic concerns, this church is distinguished by its commitment to the most deprived, offering help and support in many areas, including education, health and humanitarian work.

Roger Bimwala, Rector of William Booth University, recalled the Salvation Army’s humanitarian legacy in the DRC, highlighting its crucial role in establishing essential infrastructure such as schools, hospitals and health centers. A remarkable contribution that has helped improve the living conditions of many people across the country.

The commitment of the Salvation Army community is not limited to material assistance. Indeed, it also aims to promote Salvationist youth, offering educational and development opportunities to younger generations. The theme chosen for this year, “We are marching towards the centenary”, illustrates the ambitious vision of this church which aspires to total independence and autonomy, a sine qua non condition to continue its humanitarian mission in a sustainable manner.

At the origin of this beautiful adventure is the Belgian missionary couple, Léon-Henri and Paula Becquet, whose dedication was at the origin of the establishment of the Salvation Army in the DRC in 1934. Their pioneering action allowed the creation of educational and health structures essential for the development of the country, leaving a precious legacy that continues today.

The festivities of the 90th anniversary of the Salvation Army will extend until October 15, 2024, offering the opportunity for everyone to celebrate the values of mutual aid, solidarity and peace that make the strength and beauty of this religious community. In these troubled times, when peace and solidarity are more necessary than ever, the example of the Salvation Army resonates as a call to unity and action for a better world.
