Cooperation between the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and the European Union is a fundamental pillar of the efforts deployed for the stabilisation of the Great Lakes region in 2024. The recent discussions between Gracia Yamba Kazadi, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the DRC, and Johan Borgstam, High Representative of the European Union in the Great Lakes, highlighted the common commitment to peace and security in this sensitive area.
This meeting, which is part of the regular consultations between the two parties, underlined the importance of the European Union’s support for initiatives aimed at stabilising the region. In particular, the European Union’s support for the Luanda Process and the Nairobi Process was highlighted as essential to foster the resolution of armed conflicts and promote cross-border cooperation between the countries of the Great Lakes region.
Johan Borgstam reaffirmed the European Union’s commitment to supporting the DRC in its efforts to maintain stability in the Great Lakes region. This financial and logistical support is of paramount importance, particularly in the face of the persistent security challenges facing the DRC, particularly in the east of the country where armed groups continue to sow violence and destabilise the region.
Close cooperation between the DRC and the European Union is therefore an essential vector for fostering lasting peace, a sine qua non condition for economic development and regional stability. By supporting regional diplomatic mechanisms and providing support for stabilisation initiatives, the European Union is actively contributing to building a more peaceful and prosperous future for the populations of the Great Lakes region.
This collaboration demonstrates the shared desire of both parties to work together to overcome security challenges and build a better future for all. It embodies the hope for a peaceful Great Lakes region, where cooperation and solidarity prevail over tensions and conflicts.
