The news in the Democratic Republic of Congo continues to be marked by violence and instability, particularly in the Mambasa region of Ituri, where attacks by ADF rebels have spread terror among the local population. In the space of a month, at least thirty-two people have lost their lives in these attacks, also causing the displacement of more than eight thousand civilians. The situation is alarming and requires urgent action by the competent authorities.
Civil society actors and human rights defenders on the ground are sounding the alarm, denouncing the occupation of several agricultural areas by the rebels, thus depriving residents of their livelihoods. The repeated attacks by the ADF and their Mai-Mai allies contribute to the persistent insecurity in the region, endangering the lives of civilians, particularly farmers who are directly affected by this violence.
The impact of this violence is devastating, as demonstrated by the recent incident in the village of Luhindi, where rebels committed atrocities and burned homes. Residents live in constant fear, not knowing when or where the next attack will occur. It is urgent to protect these vulnerable populations and put an end to this spiral of violence that is only getting worse.
The calls by local dignitaries for the intervention of security forces, in particular the FARDC and their allies, to neutralize the rebels and restore peace in the region are legitimate and necessary. It is imperative that concrete measures be taken to guarantee the safety of civilians and protect them from attacks by armed groups that are spreading terror.
The international community must not remain indifferent to this humanitarian crisis that continues to worsen. Concerted actions and strengthened cooperation between local, national and international actors are essential to put an end to this violence and allow populations to live in peace and security.
It is high time that sustainable solutions are put in place to end the impunity of armed groups and ensure the protection of civilians. The inhabitants of the Mambasa region deserve to live in serenity and stability, far from the horrors of war and violence that have marked their daily lives for too long.
