Fatshimetrie, October 7, 2024 – The city of Mbuji-Mayi, located in the Kasai Oriental province of the Democratic Republic of Congo, is facing a worrying situation of food insecurity. To address this, 173 tons of corn have been put up for sale by the General Strategic Reserve, in partnership with the Marthe Kasalu Foundation.
According to Nestor Kabamba, deputy coordinator in charge of operations at the General Strategic Reserve, this initiative aims to meet the food needs of the most vulnerable populations in Mbuji-Mayi. He emphasizes that this sale of corn is only the beginning of a larger project aimed at ensuring food security in the region. He plans to expand the points of sale to 5 in the near future and even plans to build up a stock of 5,000 tons of corn in partnership with the World Food Program.
The General Strategic Reserve thus plans to sell significant quantities of corn, produced internally or acquired from its partners, in order to effectively combat food insecurity in Kasai Oriental. This approach is part of a desire to support the actions of the Head of State and to mobilize the local population around this life-saving project.
It is hoped that this initiative will contribute to improving the living conditions of the inhabitants of Mbuji-Mayi and to guarantee adequate food for all. This exemplary approach of solidarity and mutual aid deserves to be welcomed and encouraged, because it demonstrates the ability of local actors to take concrete action to overcome the challenges they face.
