Crucial improvement in access to electricity in the DRC: A look back at Snel initiatives

Fatshimetrie, October 7, 2024 (ACP). The week of September 30 to October 6, 2024 was marked by a series of crucial initiatives by the National Electricity Company (Snel) aimed at improving the availability of electrical energy throughout the territory of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

In the province of Tshopo, more precisely in Kisangani, a delegation from the general management of Snel carried out an assessment visit to the rehabilitation work on the electricity network in the commune of Lubunga. This electrification project, which aims to also cover other communes in the city of Kisangani, notably Makiso, promises a significant improvement in access to electricity for the inhabitants of this region.

In Grand-Katanga, the drop in electricity production due to the low water levels of the Lufira and Lualaba rivers, local sources of hydroelectric energy, has caused difficulties in the supply of electricity to subscribers. Additional challenges such as the theft of aluminum cables and illegal constructions along high-voltage lines have also affected the ability to transport electricity to end users.

In Haut-Uélé province, the Snel delegation from Kinshasa undertook an assessment mission of the Power Plant and the medium and low-voltage distribution networks in Isiro. This initiative comes ahead of the canonization ceremony of Blessed Annualite Nengapeta scheduled for 1 December 2024, highlighting the importance of ensuring reliable power supply for upcoming events.

In Kinshasa, targeted interventions were carried out to strengthen the stability of the energy supply. Snel technical teams replaced conductors, maintained electromechanical equipment, recommissioned substations and re-energized electrical cabins in different districts of the Congolese capital, thus ensuring optimal management of the electricity distribution network.

These efforts by Snel demonstrate its commitment to improving access to electricity throughout the Congolese territory, despite the challenges encountered. By investing in the modernization of electrical infrastructure and combating disruptions such as cable theft and violations of standards, the company actively contributes to improving the living conditions of populations and to the sustainable development of the country.
