Social networks now occupy a prominent place in the lives of adolescents in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, TikTok, Viber, WhatsApp, so many platforms that are part of the daily lives of young people, but which also raise concerns among parents and educators.
Sophie Bosaka, coordinator of the NGO “Boyokani”, appeals to parents to ensure responsible use of social networks by their children. Indeed, if these platforms offer opportunities to strengthen friendships, entertainment and intellectual stimulation, they can also become a source of danger for adolescents.
It is necessary to take into account the risks incurred by adolescents on social networks, particularly with regard to inappropriate content, verbal violence, harassment, or negative influences. Social platforms can sometimes become addictive, exposing young people to content that is harmful to their development and growth.
The NGO “Boyokani” warns against the excesses of social networks, which can be used to spread hateful, racist, sexist, or homophobic speech. It is essential that parents and educators remain vigilant and engaged in monitoring the use of social networks by adolescents, in order to protect them from the dangers they may face online.
By promoting open dialogue, by raising awareness among young people about the issues related to the use of social networks, by encouraging them to develop a critical mindset regarding the content they consult, it is possible to prevent excesses and promote positive and responsible use of social networks. Adults have an essential role to play in the digital education of adolescents, by guiding and supporting them in this constantly evolving digital universe.
It is necessary to raise awareness among adolescents about the risks associated with social networks, while promoting the opportunities offered by these platforms to promote exchange, creativity, and openness to the world. By encouraging ethical and respectful use of social networks, it is possible to build a healthy and secure online environment for adolescents in the DRC.
