Shocking incident in Yaba, Nigeria: Violent clash between Nigerian Army and Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corporation

Concern and outrage have gripped the town of Yaba, Nigeria, following a shocking incident between officers of the Nigerian Army and operatives of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corporation, popularly known as KAI. A scene of unconscionable violence unfolded, leaving the local population stunned and outraged.

According to the Commissioner for Environment, Tokunbo Wahab, the KAI operatives were assaulted while carrying out their duties by demolishing a structure illegally erected by soldiers near the fence of the Yaba College of Technology. This legitimate intervention sparked the rage of the military authorities who ordered the attack on the KAI operatives.

Wahab said: “Earlier today, officers of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corporation, were acting on duty in Yaba when they were violently attacked by members of the Nigerian Army, under the command of Major Adebiyi and Captain Gowon.”

He also expressed appreciation to the Chief of Army Staff, Major General T. Lagbaja and the Director of Religious Services, Lieutenant Colonel T.E. Ogbonyomi for their prompt intervention that enabled the KAI officers to resume their duties without interruption.

The attack was strongly condemned by Wahab, who stressed that such acts will not be tolerated in the future. He reaffirmed the state’s commitment to ensuring a cleaner Lagos by adhering to safety and sanitation standards.

The Corporation Commander, Major Olaniyi Cole (retd.), corroborated the Commissioner’s statement, saying that the operatives were on the scene to mark some structures for demolition when the soldiers violently attacked the KAI operatives. Thanks to the prompt intervention of the military authorities, the incident was narrowly averted.

Despite the shocking attack, Cole assured that it will not hamper their lawful mission. He made it clear that the Corporation is determined to rid Lagos of any type of nuisance, without fear of reprisals, irrespective of the status or class of the individuals concerned.

The incident highlights the critical importance of respecting institutions and laws, as well as the need to preserve peace and harmony within the community. It also underscores the responsibility of the authorities to ensure the safety of all citizens and preserve a healthy environment for future generations.
