RSIEC office in Port Harcourt strengthened in view of local elections to be suspended

Fatshimetrie seized the headlines with the news that the RSIEC office in Port Harcourt has been heavily secured to protect the premises following a Federal Court order halting the local council elections scheduled for October 5.

In response to earlier rumours that the RSIEC secretariat had been closed, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, spokesperson for the command, told journalists in Port Harcourt that the reports were false. She said police officers were positioned at the RSIEC office to ensure security of the premises against the risk of attacks, as the October 1 nationwide protests were underway in the state capital.

“The police presence at the premises is strictly for security purposes and not to interfere with the electoral process,” she said.

Iringe-Koko urged reporters to verify their information before publication to avoid the spread of fake news. The police spokesperson also denied allegations that officers assaulted protesters during the #FearInOctober march in the state.

Despite the Federal Court’s decision to suspend the elections, the RSIEC has affirmed its determination to continue with the local council elections process on Saturday.

In an effort to ensure the peaceful conduct of the electoral process, the authorities have taken preventive measures to ensure the security of the premises in the face of possible threats.

This situation raises questions about the stability of the democratic process and the security of the polling places. It is imperative to ensure transparency and integrity of the electoral process, while ensuring the safety of voters and personnel involved.
