Uvira, October 1, 2024 – In South Kivu, Democratic Republic of Congo, a remarkable initiative has emerged to raise awareness among women and girls about their right to abortion. Organized on the occasion of World Abortion Rights Day, this campaign aims to inform the community about the dangers of clandestine abortions that endanger the lives of women and girls.
The medical director of the Methodist Church Hospital, Claude Watokalusu, and consultant to the organization SOS Femmes et Enfants en Catastrophe (SOS FEC), shared poignant testimonies on the reasons that push women to resort to abortion. Among these, fear of the consequences of an unwanted pregnancy, social stigma, parental anger and family pressure are important factors to take into account. In addition, sexual violence and unwanted pregnancies can lead some women to turn to risky solutions such as resorting to quacks to perform clandestine abortions.
It is essential to emphasize that clandestine abortions represent a real danger to women’s health, and that it is crucial to promote an open dialogue on reproductive health. SOS FEC has been committed for a decade to raising awareness among the population on the importance of contraceptive methods, and has seen its monthly consultations increase significantly thanks to its Social Welfare Supervision Center (CEBES).
To mark this event, a motorized caravan was set up, allowing participants to travel through the town of Kalundu to raise awareness about the fight against clandestine abortions. This initiative aims to break the taboos surrounding abortion and encourage an open dialogue on reproductive health.
In conclusion, this awareness campaign on the right to abortion is a crucial step in promoting the health of women and girls. It is essential to continue to encourage appropriate medical consultations, to combat clandestine abortions and to promote safe and legal access to abortion for all women.
