The Democratic Republic of Congo calls for the mobilization of its scientists to fight against Mpox, an epidemic that continues to rage in the country. A forum organized by the NGO Biogenèse and the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Kinshasa highlighted the importance of research and innovative solutions to counter this scourge.
Dr. Jean-Jacques Muyembe, Director General of the National Institute for Biomedical Research (INRB), stressed the urgency for Congolese scientists to mobilize in the fight against Mpox. He recalled that the solution to this deadly epidemic lies in advances in science and research.
The INRB, a pioneer in the field of medical research in the DRC since 1989, has identified the clades responsible for the transmission of the Mpox virus, while continuing its studies on the potential reservoirs of the disease. Prof. Muyembe stressed that as long as the reservoir of the virus remains unknown, the population will remain vulnerable to Mpox.
For his part, Robert Shongo, Director of the National Mpox Control Program, stressed the importance of preventive measures to stem the spread of the epidemic. He stressed the importance of awareness raising, regular hand washing and responsible sexual practices to protect the population against Mpox.
As the number of deaths due to Mpox exceeds 900 this year and suspected cases are on the rise, the WHO has declared the epidemic a public health emergency of international concern. Collaboration between scientists, authorities and the population is essential to overcome this health crisis and protect the Congolese population.
In conclusion, the mobilization of scientists and health actors is essential to fight Mpox in the DRC. Research and innovation will play a key role in the fight against this epidemic, and raising awareness among the population is essential to contain its spread. With a shared commitment, the DRC can overcome the challenge of Mpox and protect the health of its citizens.
