Fight against book piracy in Port Harcourt: A crucial operation by the NCC

The anti-book piracy operation conducted by the Port Harcourt Division of the Nigerian Intellectual Property Commission (NCC), led by Abdul Babatunde, has highlighted the critical importance of combating this illicit practice. Indeed, during a recent operation in the GRA, Rumuibekwe, Rumuokwurusi and East-West Road areas, counterfeit books worth an estimated N2.5 million were seized by the relevant authorities.

The determined action is aimed at countering the nefarious activities of school owners who are engaged in the illegal trade of pirated books, thereby disrupting the legitimate book market. Abdul Babatunde stressed the need to put an end to such illegal practices and said that the school owners involved are being rigorously investigated and may be brought to court if sufficient evidence of their involvement is established.

As the Director of the NCC in Port Harcourt, Abdul Babatunde has made it clear that he will not give any respite to counterfeit book dealers operating under his jurisdiction. This action is in line with the Commission’s mandate to protect the rights of authors and investors in the field of copyright. Indeed, the Director General of the NCC, Dr. John Asien, has a zero tolerance policy towards piracy and violations of copyright laws.

Abdul Babatunde issued a strong warning to school owners, booksellers, printers and importers of counterfeit books, urging them to immediately abandon such illegal practices. He also cautioned the public against supporting pirates, stressing that such activity is an offence punishable by law.

This anti-book piracy operation in Port Harcourt is a crucial step in combating this menace to the book industry and authors’ rights. It highlights the importance of preserving the integrity of the book market and defending intellectual property rights. Ultimately, it is a call for vigilance and cooperation from all stakeholders to ensure an environment that respects creators and their work.
