**Unlawful attacks in Congo: the tragedy continues**
Since the beginning of 2024, the Goma region in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo has been the scene of a series of deadly attacks by the Rwandan army and M23 rebels. This armed conflict has had dramatic consequences for the already fragile and vulnerable civilian population.
Reports published by Human Rights Watch highlight the numerous violent incidents that took place between January and May 2024, with artillery and rocket fire hitting displacement camps and densely populated areas. These indiscriminate attacks have caused the deaths of many civilians, including many children, and have led to massive population displacement.
HRW senior researcher Clémentine de Montjoye highlighted the climate of terror in which civilians and displaced people live, caught between the different forces involved. Civilians have become potential targets, exposed to artillery fire and violent reprisals.
The international community has a crucial role to play in resolving this conflict. It is imperative that diplomatic pressure be brought to bear on Rwanda and the DRC to end these flagrant violations of international humanitarian law. The Congolese and Rwandan authorities must assume their responsibilities and take concrete measures to protect civilians and allow unhindered access for humanitarian aid.
The abuses committed by Congolese militias and armed forces against civilians are also deplorable and must be condemned. Rape, extortion and violence in IDP camps are war crimes that must be punished.
The militarization of IDP camps only aggravates the situation by making them potential targets. It is essential that the parties to the conflict respect the laws of war and ensure the protection of civilians.
At the same time, it is essential that humanitarian aid be delivered securely, in order to meet the urgent needs of the population affected by this conflict.
In conclusion, it is urgent that concrete and immediate actions be taken to put an end to these deadly attacks and protect the fundamental rights of civilians in Congo. The international community cannot remain passive in the face of this tragedy that continues to unfold before our eyes.
