In a remote corner of Kenya, a group of Kenyan women with disabilities have embarked on an innovative and socially beneficial initiative: manufacturing reusable sanitary pads. This venture, led by Tunaweza Foundation, is more than just an economic activity for these women. It is a way for them to support themselves while providing an essential product to many women across the country.
The need for affordable sanitary pads is critical in a country where many women struggle financially to afford disposable products each month. With Tunaweza Foundation’s reusable pads, women can save money in the long run while also helping to protect the environment.
Charity Chahasi, Director of Tunaweza Foundation, highlights the importance of these pads: “Our pads are economical because you don’t have to buy a new one every month. They can be used for three years, which saves a lot of money. Plus, they are environmentally friendly.”
Despite the challenges that the Tunaweza Foundation faces, such as the lack of adequate equipment and transportation, the company manages to produce up to 3,000 pads per week in good months. This initiative also has a positive impact on employment, employing more than 20 people, including people with disabilities.
In addition to the economic benefits, these reusable pads provide great comfort to women. A student named Anne testifies: “My education in high school was difficult when I used regular pads. I was uncomfortable with them… That’s when I discovered the group of women who make reusable sanitary pads. They taught me how to use, wash and maintain them.”
One of the great strengths of this project is its positive environmental impact. Unlike disposable sanitary pads that contribute to plastic pollution, the reusable pads from the Tunaweza Foundation are sustainable and environmentally friendly.
