International mobilization for displaced persons in the Democratic Republic of Congo

In a context marked by massive population displacements in the Democratic Republic of Congo, a voice is being raised to call for international mobilization in favor of displaced persons and refugees in the DRC. Ruvendrini Menikdiwela, United Nations Assistant High Commissioner for Refugees, recently visited camps in the Bunia region, in Ituri, to assess the projects implemented by UNHCR and other humanitarian organizations as part of the voluntary return program for displaced persons.

During her field visit, the Assistant High Commissioner was able to see the progress made, particularly in terms of permanent housing granted to some displaced persons. This observation was marked by a message of hope emanating from these populations who now have a roof, a plot of land to cultivate, thanks to the support of local authorities and humanitarian organizations. Nevertheless, Ruvendrini Menikdiwela stressed the importance of maintaining this assistance effort to meet the needs that are still present.

Displaced persons, for their part, have expressed their concerns, highlighting the lack of access to medical care, a problem that has persisted for several years. In the Tsere camp, Chrysanthe Ndjabu testified to the absence of medical care since May 2021, as well as the lack of drinking water and the unsanitary conditions of the premises.

This situation raises a humanitarian emergency that must be resolved. Access to quality health care is a fundamental right for every individual, regardless of their displacement status. In this sense, it is essential that the international community mobilize to provide continued assistance to displaced persons and refugees in the DRC. The support of local authorities, humanitarian organizations and international partners is essential to improve the living conditions of these vulnerable populations and guarantee their dignity.

Ultimately, the situation of displaced persons in the DRC underlines the importance of international solidarity and commitment to refugee rights. By working together, we can help provide a safer and more stable future for those who have been forced to flee their homes.
