On 24 September 2024, a crucial decision was taken in Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo. A joint committee to organize the funeral of Dolly Ibefo Mbunga was set up following a crisis meeting between the National Human Rights Commission and various human rights organizations.
This committee, led by the President of the National Human Rights Commission, Paul Nsapu, includes key figures such as Bishop Ejiba Yamapia, Rostin Manketa and Jonas Tshiombela. These major actors committed to coordinating the preparations for Dolly Ibefo Mbunga’s funeral, stressing the importance of paying tribute to this man who succeeded the late Floribert Chebeya as head of the Voice of the Voiceless (VSV).
Dolly Ibefo Mbunga, Vice-President of the VSV and successor to Floribert Chebeya, tragically lost her life on 29 September in Kananga, capital of the Kasai Central province. Her death has profoundly shaken Congolese society, recalling the commitment and courage of human rights defenders in an often difficult context.
Dolly Ibefo Mbunga’s funeral will be held in the solemn setting of the National Human Rights Commission and the VSV, major institutions for the defence of human rights in the DRC. Two portraits will be exhibited, two chapels of rest will be set up and books of condolence will be opened, offering everyone the opportunity to pay their last respects to this man who dedicated his life to the fight for justice and freedom.
Beyond this funeral ceremony, an entire community will come together to honor the memory of Dolly Ibefo Mbunga, recalling that the ideals for which he fought will continue to guide those who pursue the quest for a more just world that respects human rights.
