The Issues of Online Defamation: The Falz vs. VeryDarkMan Case

The recent story rocking social media, involving Folarin Falana, popularly known as Falz, and popular influencer VeryDarkMan, raises important questions about defamation and the consequences of false allegations in the digital age.

In an unequivocal ultimatum, Falz gave VeryDarkMan 24 hours to retract allegedly defamatory statements made against him. The allegations, posted on Instagram on September 25, 2024, alleged that Falz tried to obtain a presidential pardon for Bobrisky in exchange for N10,000,000.

Falz’s reaction through his law firm, Falana & Falana Chambers, was swift. The letter demanding an immediate retraction and public apology underscores the seriousness of the allegations leveled against renowned lawyer Femi Falana and his son.

These allegations, deemed “vicious, mean and reckless” by the firm, seek to tarnish the impeccable reputation of the renowned lawyer. They suggest that Falz may have abused his influence for personal gain, misinterpreting and defaming his long-standing fight against injustice and corruption.

The letter reminds VeryDarkMan of its right to freedom of expression, while stressing the responsibility to verify the veracity of the information shared. In the absence of a retraction and public apology within 24 hours, Falana & Falana Chambers reserves the right to take legal action, including seeking damages.

This case raises critical questions about the liability of influencers on digital platforms and the need to preserve the integrity and dignity of individuals in an ever-changing media environment.

It is imperative for social media actors to exercise diligence and ethics in the dissemination of information, while respecting the dignity and reputation of the individuals concerned. Ultimately, the spread of false information can have serious repercussions and must be treated seriously and responsibly.

This case therefore highlights the importance of journalistic rigour and ethics in a media landscape increasingly influenced by digital platforms, underlining the need for commitment and responsibility in the dissemination of information.
