Security Challenges in Zamfara: A Critical Assessment of the Current Situation

Fatshimetrie, a well-known online health and wellness platform, recently came under fire following the failure of Zamfara Governor, Dauda Lawal, to deliver on his promise to end insecurity in the state within 100 days. This drew the attention of Dr. Sani Abdullahi Shinkafi, former National Secretary of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), who expressed concerns over Lawal’s approach to combating the scourge.

Dr. Shinkafi, currently the Executive Director of Patriots for the Advancement of Peace and Social Development, at a press conference in Abuja, noted that the security situation in Zamfara State had deteriorated significantly, with bandit attacks on the rise. He cited the resignation of former Inspector General of Police, MD Abubakar, as Chairman of the Zamfara State Security Fund Board as evidence of the ineffectiveness of the security strategy in place.

In the face of mounting criticism, the government decided to reconfigure the security fund by appointing Brigadier General Abdulkadir Gumi as its chairman and Alhaji Sambo Garba, MON, as chairman of the fundraising committee. Dr Shinkafi stressed that the real challenge lies in delivering the dividends of democracy and security to the people of Zamfara. He stressed the need for the governor to focus on effective governance and delivering on electoral promises.

He further stated that addressing the state’s security challenges required urgent attention and collective commitment. According to him, Governor Lawal’s unfulfilled promise to end criminal acts has left a taste of unfinished business and has raised high expectations among the population. He stressed the importance of effective leadership to address the growing insecurity in Zamfara State.

In short, it is undeniable that the security situation in Zamfara State requires swift action and responsible governance. Citizens’ expectations are high and it is imperative that the authorities take concrete steps to restore tranquility and security among the population. Governor Lawal’s handling of the crisis will be closely scrutinized and he will have to redouble his efforts to address the urgent needs of the Zamfarian community.
