At the heart of the recent Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR) meeting in Abuja, former President Goodluck Jonathan provided insightful advice at the event marking the International Day of Peace. With palpable conviction, he stressed that even the most advanced systems can be manipulated by corrupt individuals.
In a powerful speech, Jonathan asserted that technology, while useful, cannot alone curb electoral fraud as long as it is in the hands of dishonest individuals. Concerns over recent electoral irregularities were highlighted by the former head of state, underscoring the persistent challenges facing democracy.
The former president called for a change in mindset among African politicians, identifying power struggles as the main cause of instability on the continent. According to him, the pursuit of peace and ethical leadership is imperative to ensure regional stability.
Dr Samuel Iroye, Head of Peace and Conflict Studies at the National Open University of Nigeria, echoed this by emphasizing the importance of youth engagement and equitable access to education in promoting peace. He stressed the need for collective responsibility in creating a peaceful and equitable society.
IPCR Director General, Dr Joseph Ochogwu, added his voice to this call by stressing that peace must be constantly nurtured through targeted investments and adequate prioritization. It is crucial that building a culture of peace is at the heart of national and regional concerns.
In recognition of his tireless efforts in promoting peace and his commitment to national interests rather than personal ambitions, Goodluck Jonathan was awarded a Fellowship by the IPCR. This symbolic recognition underscores the importance of cooperation and continued commitment to peace and stability in the region.
This meeting is a powerful reminder of the need for collective action and shared vision to overcome the political and social challenges that hinder progress and cohesion in Africa. Lessons learned from these exchanges underscore the importance of transparent governance, inclusive education and civic engagement to build a peaceful and prosperous future for all.
