Injustice and Abuse of Power: The Case of the Adara Elders v. Nasiru El-Rufa’i

Fatshimetrie – A Case of Injustice and Abuse of Power

The case of the Adara Elders in Southern Kaduna against former Governor Nasiru El-Rufa’i is a disturbing testimony of injustice and violation of fundamental rights. The Elders claim to have been arbitrarily arrested, unjustly imprisoned and harassed by the El-Rufa’i-led administration in 2019. Their quest for justice has taken them to the Federal High Court in Kaduna, where they are seeking damages of N2.3 billion for the injuries suffered.

Under the able leadership of Aweni Dio Maisamari, former Chairman of the Adara Development Association (ADA), the plaintiffs are seeking compensation for their unjust detention, general and exemplary damages, as well as special damages, given the gravity of the rights violated. The hearing before the Federal Court in Kaduna was adjourned by Justice Hauwa’u Buhari to allow for proper notice to the affected parties, in accordance with Section 5, Rule 7 of the Human Rights Act.

Counsel for the plaintiffs, Gloria Ballason, noted that her clients were unjustly imprisoned for over three months by the previous administration of the state, before being released for lack of evidence. She decried the arbitrary arrests and rights violations under the El-Rufa’i administration, going so far as to mention the strange death of the Adara Chief, Rafael Maiwada Galadima, which occurred concurrently with the arrests.

It is clear that the Nasiru Elrufai administration was notorious for its repeated human rights violations, ranging from killings to wrongful imprisonment to attacks. The plaintiffs seek damages to end the unlawful orders, compensation for the arbitrary arrests, and general and exemplary damages, as well as special damages for the injuries suffered.

The Adara Elders case is an important reminder of the need to respect the fundamental rights of all citizens and hold those accountable for their actions. It is essential that justice prevails in this case and that the victims obtain redress for the wrongs suffered. In continuing their quest for truth and justice, the Adara Elders have demonstrated extraordinary courage and determination that deserve to be commended and supported. May the light of truth shine upon this case and justice be served for those who have been wronged.
