The Ibadan Ring Road Project: Reconciliation and Commitment to Community Advancement

The Ibadan Ring Road project, which is being implemented in six localities in Oyo State, has recently raised concerns among affected residents. However, Governor Seyi Makinde has pledged to respect the initial 150-metre clearance set by former Governor Lam Adesina.

The affected residents had expressed dissatisfaction over a 500-metre government clearance, which would result in demolitions and major notices on their properties. Their peaceful protest outside the governor’s office at the Secretariat drew attention to the dispute.

In his response to the protesters, Governor Makinde commended their peaceful protest, stressing the importance of maintaining law and order. He clarified that the Ring Road project was initiated by the late Lam Adesina with a clearance of 75 metres on each side, totalling 150 metres. Subsequent administrations extended the clearance to 500 metres, a decision his government is currently implementing without any amendment.

Expressing gratitude to the community for their support during the elections, the governor reaffirmed his commitment to prioritise the welfare of the residents in all economic policies and programmes. He announced an immediate halt to any further demolition or marking of property beyond the initial 150-metre clearance.

Makinde stressed the need for open and honest communication, rejecting the politicisation of the issue. He called on community representatives to collaborate with government to find solutions, stressing that the ring road project is aimed at creating jobs and attracting industries to the area.

Cautioning against land speculation and encouraging residents to respect planning regulations, the governor assured that no house would be demolished in the current corridor. He also warned against further construction without proper planning and promised action against land grabbers.

In conclusion, Seyi Makinde reminded residents that they have a say in government and it is imperative to work together to find lasting solutions. Its commitment to the well-being of the population, combined with transparent and respectful management, paves the way for fruitful collaboration for the development of the region.
