Fatshimetrie, September 23, 2024 – The Nikita tourist site, a place once animated by the presence of a mini zoological garden and ancient sculptures transformed into a museum, now stands abandoned a few hundred meters from the eastern entrance to the city of Mbuji-Mayi, located in the heart of Kasai Oriental in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Louis Nikita, the visionary entrepreneur behind this project, gives us a poignant testimony on the current situation of this site which, in the past, was intended to offer a space for leisure and cultural discovery to the local population.
The Nikita tourist site was to be much more than just a place of entertainment. In addition to the mini zoological garden and the museum showcasing ancient works, Louis Nikita had conceived this project as a place conducive to the encounter between nature, culture and education. Unfortunately, due to lack of resources and support, the site had to reduce its activities. Today, the zoo’s animal collection has dwindled from 24 specimens to just three. Difficulties in feeding the animals have forced the team to release some of them into their natural habitat, in the hope that they can return to a normal wild life.
Louis Nikita deplores the lack of support from provincial authorities for this project, which, beyond its recreational aspects, aimed to promote local culture and offer a real educational experience to visitors. He therefore calls for awareness of the importance of preserving these spaces of discovery and learning, not only for the well-being of the animals that reside there, but also for the cultural development of the region.
Despite the difficulties encountered, Louis Nikita remains hopeful and aims to revive the Nikita tourist site by focusing more on the promotion of culture and artistic activities. He hopes to see the return of cultural brooms, folkloric events and all forms of artistic expression that make up the richness of local culture. For him, the revitalization of this emblematic site is not only a necessity, but also a duty towards the community and future generations.
