The Battle for Edo State Governorship: A Tale of Determination, Challenges and Unexpected Victory

The Edo State governorship polls have resulted in the defeat of the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo, against all odds. The election was held amidst considerable controversy.

In an address to his supporters on Monday, September 23, the unsuccessful candidate, Ighodalo, lauded the sacrifices made by the people of Edo State. He noted the determination of many voters who, despite the odds, voted for him.

“I want to express my profound gratitude to each and every one of you who have supported us throughout this incredible journey,” he said, praising those who endured harsh weather, intimidation, threats of violence, harassment, arrests and vote-buying attempts during the electoral process.

Ighodalo, who has been campaigning on the creation of a “Path to Prosperity for All”, deeply regretted what he termed an “unfair halt” to his campaign progress, attributing his defeat to forces that were opposed to the will of the people.

“This day will forever be etched in our history as one of our darkest moments,” he said, stressing that it was marked by the “brazen theft of our mandate”.

Despite the election result, Ighodalo delivered a determined speech, encouraging his supporters to remain committed to the cause.

“The so-called victory of evil over good is only temporary,” he said, vowing to continue working for a better Edo State.

In this eventful election, Senator Okpebholo of the APC has held his own. His surprising success demonstrates once again the importance of political strategies and the stakes that surround elections. The voters of Edo State have cast their vote and their choice, albeit a difficult and contested moment.

As the political landscape continues to evolve, it is essential to remain alert to future developments and the implications of these elections for the future of Edo State. Democracy has spoken, and the challenges remain. It remains to be seen how the various stakeholders will work together for a more prosperous and just future for all the people of Edo State.
