Fatshimetrie: Decoding New Electricity Production Sites in the DRC
In the crucial area of electricity production in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the Minister of Water Resources and Electricity has unveiled an ambitious plan to grant titles for nine new sites to operators in the sector. The objective of this initiative is clear: to accelerate the implementation of axis IV of the Government’s Action Program in order to strengthen the energy supply in the country.
The nine selected sites cover various regions of the DRC, each requiring special attention to meet the growing electricity needs. Among these sites are photovoltaic solar parks intended to support the National Electricity Company (SNEL) in key regions such as Kasai Oriental, Kasai Central, Kinshasa and Haut-Katanga. These solar installations represent a significant step forward in the country’s energy transition, enabling the exploitation of renewable resources for cleaner and more sustainable production.
In parallel, hydroelectric projects are also planned, such as the Kibamba, Kalumba, Kibombo, Mbakana, Sanga, Babeba and Kongolo sites, which will exploit the potential of local rivers to generate electricity. These initiatives are part of an approach to diversify energy sources and strengthen the production capacity of the national electricity grid.
The allocation of titles by direct agreement to operators demonstrates a political will to stimulate private investment in the electricity sector in the DRC. This approach allows for rapid implementation of projects, thus promoting an increase in energy supply throughout the territory. By relying on strategic partnerships with the private sector, the government intends to boost the development of the electricity industry and contribute to improving the living conditions of the population.
In conclusion, the nine new electricity production sites in the DRC open up many prospects for the country’s energy sector. By focusing on the complementarity of energy sources and promoting private investment, the DRC is positioning itself as a major player in the transition to cleaner and more sustainable energy. These projects reflect an ambitious vision for the country’s energy future, capable of meeting current challenges while preparing the ground for sustainable economic growth.
