Concerns over manipulation of election results in Edo State: Calls for integrity and transparency

In a recent statement, election monitoring organisation, Yiaga Africa and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), have expressed serious concern over the manipulation of the results of the Edo State governorship election at the tabulation centres by the Local Governments (LGAs). They are urging the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies to resist the manipulation.

There are reports of possible fraud during the tabulation phase, particularly in the northern part of Edo State. Reports from LGA observers indicate disruptions in the tabulation process for Oredo and Ikpoba/Okha areas. Incidents have included intimidation and the use of tear gas against observers and INEC agents in Ikpoba/Okha.

Yiaga Africa took to social media to raise concerns that the tabulation of LGA results at the state headquarters violated the established procedure for tabulation of results. The organization called on INEC to stand firm against any form of intimidation and interference. It recalled that the electoral law allows accredited observers, the media and political party agents to monitor the tabulation process at all levels. Failure to address these issues risks undermining the legitimacy of a process that had been peaceful since the election began.

It is imperative that responsible institutions ensure the integrity of the electoral process and protect the rights of voters to democratic representation. Transparency and legitimacy of elections are essential pillars of any democracy, and it is paramount that relevant authorities act impartially and accountably to ensure free and fair elections.

Finally, it is everyone’s responsibility to respect the democratic process and promote fair and transparent elections. The future of democracy in Nigeria depends on the credibility and integrity of the electoral process, and it is essential that all stakeholders commit to ensuring free and fair elections for the good of the nation as a whole.
